We spent the weekend cruising along the gulf coast - there are just miles and miles and miles and miles of perfectly fine white sand beaches. We went to the beach in Panama City, Florida but it was a bit too chilly for me and even more significantly the kids didn't want to get wet.
I never thought about vacationing to this part of the country, but although we clearly hit these towns in the off-season, it is a huge beach destination. We saw hundreds of resort hotels as we drove and nearly as many miniature golf parks - huge ones with giant creatures and mountains and waterfalls and human mazes and rides- sort of like a mini theme parks. We have been talking about mini-golfing so we did stop at one place - and Kambria stomped us all with 3 over par (getting her out of piano practice that day). We took the kids to see Planet 51 but I think their favorite part was the Hurrican Simulator in the lobby. For $2 you can lock yourself in this little booth and feel winds up to 80 mph. It was hilarious.
Our next big beach stop was Gulf Shores, Alabama and it was such a great beach that we stayed all day. There was a slight rise in the sand forming a flat ridge right on the shore, so the waves would come in an then just barely clear the ridge and spread over it, making it by far the best skim boarding beach we have ever been on. We ended up getting cheap skimboards for all of the other kids and they were at it all day.
