Going, Going, Gone!
Clearly we did not anticipate the amount of work it takes to leave town for 16 weeks. But, we finally were loaded up, Kieth and Dagny present to wave us off, and.... the battery was dead, despite the fact that the RV had been "plugged in." After one (more) tiny (hour) delay, we were off! We made it all the way to the post office in EDH before slightly high-centering on the entrance, causing anti-freeze to start pumping out into the parking lot at an alarming rate. Greg "McGuiver" Porter got right on that and (45 minutes later) we got all the way to the Nugget parking lot before the generator and electrical system stopped working - well at that point (9PM), I was glad that at least we were by the grocery store -so Greg took the kids to Round Table while I shopped. Greg, who is one of the least superstitious people I know was starting to mutter things like "maybe we aren't supposed to leave today" and "really how many things can go wrong before we get the message.." I think it was the unbearable thought of going home after what it had taken to get us out the door that ultimately drove him to continue (well that and a vanilla shake from Baskin Robbins). We even had a few crazy friends to wave us off from the Valero parking lot. And although it was in no means glamorous (no power, no AC), we made it all the way to a rest stop in Vallejo before we stopped out of sheer exhaustion to sleep, and we were grateful!
