We have had great weather in the mid-west. Not too hot, not too cold, not too humid, and although September is supposedly one of the rainiest months, so far it has only fallen at night. We walked around Nauvoo some more, and took a tour of the reconstructed blackmith’s shop and watched the Joesph Smith movie at the visitor’s center. It gave the kids a bit of chronological context for all of the places we have been visiting.
The RLDS (now the Community of Christ) owns all of the Joseph Smith properties in Nauvoo – we didn’t take a tour of the buildings, but it was interesting to read their plaques as we walked around Hyrum, Jospeh & Emma’s graves. I guess most of the Mormons who didn’t leave Nauvoo with everyone else joined the RLDS movement. We packed up and headed to Carthage. The kids were really interested to see the real place where Jospeh and Hyrum was martyred, having just seen the film version.
We next headed into Hannibal, MO, where Greg and the kids finally got their front row seat to a train crossing through town. I don’t think you can get this close to a moving train anywhere in Sacramento (and I am sort of glad about that).

It would be nice to have a map so we could see where you are and where you are going and how far Greg is driving every day. I look at your blog every morning and it makes me happy... love you all.

I am still checking in on you every few days...
ReplyDeleteI love reliving this trip with you, we were there in our RV last year about this time! Such a great time! So, our advice is stay out of Chicago downtown, especially the blue light district! Lots of low bridges there too! ...And keep your eyes on the road when I-80/90 split, we missed Kirtland altogether! Kaele, can we count this as my visiting teaching visit for September? (today's the last day - I can still get 100% !)
;) Have fun guys!
