Land of Tom and Huck

Hannibal, MO is where Samuel Clemens (AKA Mark Twain) was born.  He moved away as a young married man and never came back much, but by his own admission, his books The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were based on childhood friends and experiences from his hometown.  So almost everything in town is designed to capitalize on this claim to fame: Becky Thatcher Ice Cream Parlor, Mark Twain Hotel, Injun Joe RV campground - you get the idea.  So we had a Mark Twain day.

Highlights were the river boat ride (these pics show "Lovers Leap" and "Jackson Island") and the Tom Sawyer Cave Tour.  It was huge with passageways everywhere and natural clay floors where kids could have easily explored for hours - and as Sam Clemens did.  The geography of the cave follows the events in the books exactly and it made for a really fun tour.

Greg and I also really enjoyed the Mark Twain Museum's collection of original Norman Rockwell paintings that were done to illustrate at 1930s edition of Tom Sawyer.
