Cold Spell in Colorado

Everyone keeps saying that we have such bad timing – we keep hearing “it was beautiful here yesterday” and “its supposed to be warm again on Thursday”.  Sadly, we’ll have to take their word for it - we woke up to the sounds of our kids yelling “It’s snowing!  Open the windows.”  We decided to hightail it out of Central City before it started to come down even harder, only to have to deal with a dead battery in the Acura.  Greg assured me that it wasn’t due to the cold, but rather to a light left on.  Mason and Greg were pretty wet and cold when they came back inside.  I am starting to wonder if we are going to have to get snow clothes on this trip. And here I thought that I designed the itinerary principally to avoid having to drive in snow.  I was thinking these thoughts mostly when we accidentally got on a dirt road and couldn't turn around for awhile coming down the mountain.

Well, Breckenridge was out, and our cog train ride to the top of Pike's Peak unlikely, so we went to visit some of my cousins, Dane and Elena MacDonald and Scott and Danielle MacDonald, who conveniently live 5 minutes from eachother.  At Scott and Danielle's, the kids got the chance to see a real live record player (which they had never ever seen)– yes the kind that plays vinyl records - it was even a DJ style player where they could “scratch.” Combine that with the fact that Scott has an enormous collection of old 80s albums, and you can see that it was a pop culture “history” lesson that had something for everyone.

We also hung out with the Drapers in Colorado Springs – the kids enjoyed being with “real” friends (not siblings). They graciously let us park our RV in their cul-de-sac which turned the visit into a bit of a slumber party for the kids.

The Drapers did a good job convincing us that our impromptu visit did not in any way put a cramp in their normal weekday, school night routine.  Suzanne even made us waffles.  We met Dane & Elena and for a family lunch on our way out of town and enjoyed getting “caught up” over Chinese food.  We may not have had nice weather (Denver may get 10 inches of snow tonight), but Colorado was very generous in good friends and relatives.

  2. I can't believe you are in the snow when it is 104 degrees here in Murrieta. Seeing as how I'm weeks from delivery, I would much rather be where you are! Keep up the adventure.
