We spent the day in Glacier National Park and decided that for the average uninformed tourist, the park is misnamed. It does have stunning views and beautiful features, but while the the park may have been formed by glaciers and you can see a few shrinking remnants of glaciers, way up at the top of the mountains, we did not have the opportunity to walk on or even touch a glacier. That privilege was only available to those willing to either hire a 4WD jeep tour or to hike at least 10 miles. However, our visit was still well worth it. While driving the "Going to the Sun" Highway, we spied a black bear just off of the road - we stopped our car and it just sat there for several minutes before crossing the road and ambling on. We were probably only 4 feet from it, taking pictures out the window. That is by far the closest that any of us had ever been to a bear. It was super cool. There were also tons of glacial melt waterfalls and gorges that were perfect for hiking around, or for swimming in if you are Drake (who fell off of a log fully dressed) or Mason (who enjoys plunging into freezing water for Greg's entertainment, a pursuit for which he is of course compensated). We had a picnic lunch at an overlook and then the boys found a cliff to throw rocks off of while Greg dared Kambria to climb under the road through a run-off culvert (which she did of course). While it doesn't take much to entertain this crew, I knew that our day at Glacier was winding down. We drove into Great Falls, Montana and had dinner at the DQ and went grocery shopping at the 24 hr Super-Walmart. The kids had really wanted to do something "fun" for family night and it spurred the discussion with them as to whether families in our situation who do nothing BUT hang out with each other all day every day, really need to do something special for family night...?

Hi Porters!
ReplyDeleteYour blog and photos are making me miss the northwest so much! Whistler is one of my favorite place and my kids said they would pick going skiing there over a trip to Disneyland! Such a bummer you guys missed Sequim--bears, buffalo, all sorts of wild animals roaming around and sticking their heads in your car...it's quite an adventure. But it sounds like you guys are having an awesome experience. Love the blog!
We also went to the animal park in Squim Washington. You should see the picture we have of the tongue of a huge buffalo coming over the top of the window that was cracked a few inches into the car trying to lick Thor's mom. Pretty funny.
ReplyDeleteThings I know about you so far:
ReplyDelete1. You have a gift for taking beautiful pictures.
2. Good looking children must get their good looks from moms because Greg sure as heck didn't pass anything on! :-)
3. We miss you guys already. Nothing makes my day like a hug from Avi!
