Niagara Falls

We started out our day with a visit to the Niagara Falls State Park in NY, where we saw the fabulous IMAX film “Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic.” The kids were really excited to see a movie that their Papa made.  According to the box office posters, it has been viewed by over 14 million people.  Pretty impressive!

It was a pretty gray day but we were so grateful that it was not raining that it felt positively balmy, well at least until we got soaking wet.  And there are several ways we accomplished that – first on the Maid of the Mist boat tour that drove us upstream past the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and right up almost under Horseshoe Falls.  There is so much mist generated by the huge amount of water falling that it is like standing in a huge windy rain storm.  Then we went to the Cave of the Winds Tour (which actually does not include a cave at all since the overhang broke off almost a century ago), but which does include walking up Bridal Veil Falls on a wooden rail system (that seemed a bit rickety to me).  At the top is the Hurricane Deck where you can experience what it is like to stand under the falls.  I couldn’t quite bring myself to go all the way under, but the rest of the gang did, and got totally soaked.

We headed to the Canada side for the “much better view” and it is true, they do have a much nicer panaroma of the falls.  That side of the river is completely touristy so of course we ended up stopping at a gift shop for souvenirs and at Frankenstein’s Haunted Mansion for a fright walk – don’t even ask!  It was one of 3 or 4 spook alleys right on the main drag – very popular apparently.  I guess they know how little it takes to suck in people like us.

  1. Hey Kaele -
I have been following your BLOG! Oh my gosh, that is the funnest thing in the whole world. I seriously am living vicariously through you guys. What an adventure. This summer, alone I drove my 6 kids to Utah (3 days) in our 12 passenger van and thought that was an adventure. I am so jealous. Anyway.....we live in Richmond, VA and if you are ever anywhere near us, we'd love to see you. We could come to you or you are of course welcome to park that sweet machine outside our house. We don't want to interrupt your pace or way of life, so if it doesn't work, we understand. BUT - if you think of it and are having some down time in Williamsburg or Monticello or Civil War sights or Busch Gardens or Virginia Beach, maybe we'll come say hi.
    Happy Travels.

  2. Yeah... I played a little part of our tour. Soooo happy you got a chance to see the movie right there at the falls. Let's see, 14 million at ten bucks is 140 million and hmmmmmm how come none of that found it's way into my pocket? "Cause I'm an artist not a businessman or maybe just stupid.
    alas
    Happy you liked it.
Got Avalon's call. Tried to call back.

  3. Boy they are getting more stylish with the pretty slickers. When I did the maid of the mist tour we were stuck with heavy, black rubberized coats. Much cuter in the yellow and blue. Pretty amazing falls. Enjoying reading of your travels every day.
