Kirtland, Ohio

I think that some of the church history chronology finally clicked with the older kids at this particular church site.  They have now heard the basic story of the Saints from NY to OH to MO to IL to SLC about 4 times – it has been well-documented in films and interesting anecdotes at each historic site.   The church does a really good job of tying it all together without repeating too much.

The kids were totally absorbed by the stories they heard about all of the events significant to the organization of the Church that happened at the Newell K. Whitney Store. Kirtland was most definitely a town of firsts.  Mason especially loved the sawmill and ashery and left saying “Newell K. Whitney was really a cool guy – he did so much for the church” I can’t ask for more than that.

We took a tour through the Kirtland Temple, which is owned by the Community of Christ (RLDS).  The tour included a movie about the significance of Kirtland to them and it was interesting to see how they have slightly changed certain doctrines.  They were very nice and the tour was great.  The temple really was an amazing structure for 1836, especially when you consider the lack of materials or specialized labor - what a great historical treasure that it still stands today.

  1. Now I am envious... I've been to many of your stops along the way, but never Kirkland, OH. Loved the pictures and description of the temple there. It will one day be acquired by the LDS church of course. Only a matter of time. Nice that the former RLDS (now Community of Christ) continue to maintain the property and give tours.. they are drifting drifting drifting from the doctrines of the Restored Gospel . I'll be interested in talking to you about that when we meet again. Meanwhile - we continue to follow you day by day and LOVE the blogs. We do miss you though and pray for your continued safety.
