The weather finally caught up with our lackadaisical pace. We woke to miserable sleet, rain and wind, which did not inspire us to head out anywhere in a hurry. We did drag ourselves to church in Littleton, according to Mason & Kambria the first “normal” ward that we have attended – they should know since they are the only ones who went to class. (Dane, Drake & Avalon were very sweetly not welcomed to Primary, due to it being the final practice before the Primary program). We finally accepted that the bad weather was only getting worse and headed to Plymouth, MA where we turned every umbrella we owned inside out getting onto the Mayflower II.
The rain had turned to sleet and it was about 35 degrees and extremely windy. In the harbor we noticed one boat that was flipped over and another that had only been saved from sinking because it had beached itself. The Mayflower II is an exact replica of the original, but is 50 years old, instead of 300. We were greeted by period-costumed sailors and pilgrims on the ship, and I mentioned that it was good to visit on a day like this, since the Pilgrims too had arrived in bad weather. They were quick to agree that yes it was weather much like this, except it was much much colder when they had arrived, and who were the Pilgrims? The ship was really interesting and the kids were aghast at the living conditions of “settlers” during the 60+ day voyage (They lived below decks with the animals!
We further braved the elements to head over a short distance to Plymouth Rock – the one that has 1620 carved into it, and supposedly the exact spot where the colonists first came to shore. Later when writing in his journal, Drake asked what year the Pilgrims left. “Was it 1820 or something? Or was it like 1980?” Once you go back so far, I guess its all the same.
