We attended church at a tiny tiny branch in Joyce (Dane, Drake, and Avi doubled the Primary) because I messed up on the times for the regular ward in Port Angeles. You might have thought that they would think it strange when a family of 7 walks in (late) to a sacrament meeting of less than 40 people, but as soon as we mentioned that our daughter was a fan of Twilight, we got the "oh, yes, of course" nods. After church we made our way to none other than Forks, WA - hometown of vampires and werewolves. The drive out may have been the most beautiful that we have been on so far. A narrow road wound between Crescent Lake and the ocean on one side and the Olympic National Forest and Hoh Rainforest on the other - there was a light rain and a mist coming off of the water, with low wispy clouds trailing down dramatically steep mountains across the lake. My pictures just don't do it justice - It is easy to imagine magical creatures might lurk there. Anyways it made the trek (200 miles out of the way) worth it for those who are not such committed Edward and Bella fans (Greg, Mason). While we did not stop at Bella Italia for mushroom ravioli (did a drive by) we did drive out to the beach at La Push. It really is run by the Quiluete tribe - who knew? It is funny to see what a sudden influx of crazed tourists has done to such a small remote little town - every establishment has their little claim to Twilight fame. I felt like an unworthy Twilight fan when I only learned today that most of the movie was actually filmed around Portland. Greg is really glad that we didn't know that when we were actually driving through Portland.

The Twilight Zone

Hey Porters!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your journeys with us... I am so glad I got the blog address & will be checking in on you often. Of course, as a fellow "RVer" I have much appreciation for all of the little surprise adventures like dead end streets & delays for repairs. Sounds like you know the formula -- you gotta just "go with it" & find and appreciate those little hidden opportunities in the detours & delays. Kaele, you are a great travel journalist--a hidden talent? You never cease to amaze! Tell Cambria the birdies are happy... Can't wait to find out what happens next...have fun! Kay Lea
This entry took me back to when Thor and I drove out to Crescent Lake and got on our bikes and rode up the mountain. It was a really hard ride but we found a bunch of natural hot springs that you could sit in. We never got to Forks but enjoyed driving up to Hurricane Ridge. I assume you took the ferry from Port Angeles over to Canada?
