We made it out of the country, eh?

Crossing the border into Canada is the big travel news of the day.  A bit of a traffic jam at the border - and boy did they ever grill Greg about why he didn't have a job and why we were towing a car that didn't belong to us.  I guess not many guys (especially ones without employment) have mother-in-laws nice enough to loan them a car for four months - thanks mom!  We woke up at a rest stop somewhere between Seattle and Everett (Washington has lovely rest stops - nice bathrooms, plenty of parking, free coffee) and then stopped in Bellingham for a few items, which turned into a 3 hour trip to the mall - hey they had a Target, a Big 5 AND a food court; we couldn't tear ourselves away. The kids (not realizing that it was Labor Day) did schoolwork along the way. They are finally getting into a routine and doing a great job focusing while driving and not distracting each other too much.  Even Mason is back on schedule. We passed through Vancouver (we'll be back) and headed to Squamish - another beautiful drive, truly.  We got settled in for the night early enough that Greg and I actually went into town alone (like on a date).  Of course part of our main mission was a missing camera charger from Walmart, but we also found a great pub (The Shady Tree) that was open for dinner late and hung out and had lots of adult conversation (with no listening ears).

  1. Dagny LOVED this blog. She read it early and told me about it (before I read it) as she climbed into her GIANT SUBURBAN and I asked her how she liked being the biggest thing on the road. "I love it as a symbol of being an awesome mother in law," she quipped, or something like that. We laughed as we tried to imagine "the interview" at the border. I find it curious the border patrol would quiz Greg about his employment — or lack thereof. With 63 feet of motor home, cars, wife and kids he doesn't exactly look like a drug dealer, a felon escaping the country or a friend of Bernie Madoff. Alas, the world is a curious place. What a grand adventure you are having and what GREAT fun it is for us to tune in every morning. Dagny even likes the Porter blog MORE than FOX news.
    Love you guys.

  2. Lets see... Tillamook but nothing about the Tillamook Air Museum in the ex-blimp hangar. No Evergreen Aviation and Space museum in McMinnville to see the Spruce Goose. Nada about the great Museum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle. And, heaven forbid, a mention of one of the 7 meccas of the world, Everett, WA with nary a word about the Boeing plant or seeing the 787 Dreamliner production line. GASP! What kind of trip is this? I see a disturbing trend developing. I hope this is remedied in the future! :-) Have fun and be safe.

  3. Hey are you going to Victoria? We were just there last week and if you get there take the kids to the University there. They have thousands of rabbits running around on the grounds. It is quite the sight to see. i love reading your blog and Forrest really is jealous. He also follows your adventures. Have fun!
