Whistler BC

Squamish is a beautiful place (with a really bad name). Dane and Drake made their first Canadian friends (Joe and Rachel) and cruised around the RV park with them on bikes all morning.  It was only a short drive to Whistler, even further up the mountain; the 2010 Winter Olympic games will be held here, so it was a town in preparation.  Greg spent a while fixing up a few bike issues, and yes, assembling a new bike for Avalon - we had only brought the tag-along and she felt that she needed bike of her own.  Never mind that the sum total of her two-wheel riding experience was a few turns on the driveway several months ago.  Luckily the RV parking just happened to be right next to one of the coolest skate/bike parks we have ever seen.  There were BMX trails and wooden plank trails and several sections for skaters.  The kids could have stayed there all day.  Of course a skater snapped his femur while we were there - gross!  But Avi caught on quickly and went around the rest of the day telling everyone "I am only 5 but I can already ride a two-wheeler."  We rode the gondola to the top of Whistler peak and then took the new Peak to Peak gondola over to the top of Blackcomb peak and back - it was crazy high and literally takes you from one mountain top to another with 1.88 miles of cable in between support towers that hang you 1100 ft above the bottom of the valley.  Off-road biking trails with ramps and jumps cover the mountain - there were tons of crazy bikers that we could watch from the gondola - I had a hard time dragging Greg and Mason away from their spectating at the bottom on the hill.  We all went on a bike ride through the village and out a few miles to Lost Lake - it was really peaceful and beautiful.  It was a little to chilly to swim, since it was late in the afternoon, but it looked so tempting.  Overall a much bigger hit than the French Creperie where we ate dinner.  Whistler is definitely a place that we'd like to come back to - maybe in the Winter next time.

  1. When we were in Whistler David had his skate board and I remember going to a really great skate park with him. Isn't that area beautiful?
