Days 4 & 5 Washington DC

Since we are not scheduled to pick up the RV until Monday, we are finding the capitol city to be an excellent place to have spent a few extra days.  We toured the Capitol and the Library of Congress (cool to see Thomas Jeffereson’s library after being at Monticello), as well as walking all around the White House. And Dane finally got his ride in a double-decker bus (something he has been wanting to do since Seattle).  We took a taxi out to the Pentagon 9/11 memorial, which was really unusual with a separate water feature for every fatality, grouped by year of birth.

We decided to stop by the International Museum of Crime & Punishment, which was really fascinating (but a bit dark).  Very interesting if you want to see all sorts of medieval instruments of torture and hear all of the grisly details of every famous bank robber, serial killer and mafia gangster in our country’s history.  The museum includes a peek into the live studio of CSI – I guess this is the headquarters for that show.   So the tour included quite a bit of information about the crime investigations and how they are conducted – including a fake autopsy room (with fake bullet ridden body) –the kids really liked that.

We met up for dinner in Fairfax with Greg’s roommate and good friend from college, Dave Tenny, his wife Lynn and their 3 kids.  We haven’t seen them for 10 years so it was fun to catch up.

Today we drove out to Mt. Vernon and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of George Washington’s plantation.  The kids are a little burned out on the living history but there was lots of space to run around and the grassy hill with a view of the Potomac was fantastic.  I am trying not to give so many weather reports (due to recent feedback), but the weather today was amazing – 70 degrees and sunny.  On the way back to the hotel, we stopped by the Udvar Hazy Smithsonian Air & Space Hangar out near Dulles Airport, which houses the hundreds of airplanes, helicopters, etc. that don’t fit into the Air & Space Museum on the Mall.  My favorite thing: the Space Shuttle Enterprise.  Greg & Mason’s favorite thing: the Blackbird (SR 71).  Drake’s favorite thing: display with actual artifacts from the Transformers movies.  An all around great weekend!
